Basilius Besler () is best known for compiling the book - known as the Hortus Eystettensis. This is a codex - or florilegium ('a gathering of flowers') - of all the plants grown in the botanical garden developed by the prince bishop of Eichstatt in Bavaria.

Besler was originally employed as an Apothecary and botanist - at a time when herbal medicine was very important. The Hortus Eystettensis is a codex produced by Basilius Besler in of the garden of the bishop of Eichstätt in Bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, commissioned Besler to produce the work, which he compiled over sixteen years, although the bishop died before its completion.
